Campfire Tales

cloudcheckFaces drift through the clouds;

Ancient gods walk among the stars.

Our hearts are still

crouching near the fire,

eyeing the darkness beyond the

circle of light.

So we make

faces in the mountains,

gods named in stars,

sense out of fear.

Sometimes,

a cloud is water sailing,

stars just boiling gas,

a mountain only high ground–

overwhelming and immense

and that is not enough.

imageAll the stories we tell

have their own layered truths,

faces in clouds, gods among stars, fairytale moutains;

and we sit close

around the fire

telling stories–

trying for meaning

in the darkness.
